B generator resistors

I have a 51 Allis B with a delco generator with the cutout relay. I was told the supply voltage to the generator needs stepped down to 2-3 volts instead of the 6 volts to charge correctly. I was told this was done with resistors. Does anyone have the info for the correct value for the resistor(s)? Any help would be appreciated.Thanks, Steve

Blacksheep, a Generator dont exactly know how much voltage or current its supposed to generate, but its increased by turning it faster or strengthening the flux of the magnetic field in which the armature is rotating. Therefore, the more filed current passing through its field windings the more it can generate. To regulate and limit that field current the fields output (which is seeking a path to frame ground) is made to pass through a resistor (in light switch) of maybe .25 to 1 ohms or so in the Low Charge position (lights off) or dead ground the field for High charge (when lights are on). On later tractors they replaced both the light switch type field current control and 2 wire cutout relay with a full fledged 3 or 4 wire voltage regulator.

There is a resistor built into the light switch. When the switch is all the way in, current from the field coils is forced through the resistor, cutting the current and reducing the output of the generator to 2-3 amps. When you pull the light switch to the middle notch, the lights come on and the resistor is cut from the circuit and the current from the field coils is grounded directly to the tractor frame. This increases current throught the field coild and increases output from the generator to operate the lights. When you pull the light switch out all the way, the lights go off but the generator stays on high charge to charge a partially dead battery or if you aren"t going to run the tractor for a very long time. Other than that, there are no resistors int he charging system.
