I just bought a WD 1952 model. My question is the book states to use 20W oil in the transmission. I have seen a lot of posts that say 90W. I think the book is for an early WD because it only shows a magneto. Mine has a distributor. Was there a change during production? Thank in advance.

Are you sure about your manual? The 20w oil is for hydaulics only, the tranny and final drives requires an oil with additives for lubricating the gears. Please CAREFULLY read the manual, it can be confusing.

Absolutely. The manual that I have in front of me as I type states: (quote) TRANSMISSION, DIFFERENTIAL AND TRANSMISSION CLUTCH.
Capacity 17 quarts. Keep filled to level plug. Use S.A.E. 20W all year..... .....
I do admit that this seems a little unconventional.

I'd go with the 90w. As one person has said, it helps to slow the gears down when shifting, thus helping to avoid clashing.
Also, an old tractor like this has a tendency to leak; the heavier weight oil helps.
At Serial #136318 (1953; last year of production) they changed from a Fairbanks Morse mag to Delco-Remy #1111745 Distributor.

Thanks for the reply. I will use 90W or so. I agree about the leaks. 20W would be hard to keep in. My tractor is SN 113620. Which is a '52 as I understand. But the engine is a '53. I wonder if someone changed engines or what. Old tractors have a lot of stories to tell. Also the book states that engine SN's ending in KA is kerosene, GA is gasoline. Mine is PA, what is that for.
