I have a wd 45 which I just bought and drove about a mile to my house. Now the starter just stops when engaging the flywheel. I have jacked up a rear tire and rocked it and there is some movement (about 1/6 turn) but it is very difficult. What is my next step? Do I need to soak the cylyders? or could there be some other problem? I just rebuilt the starter and it runs fine when bench tested. Also I was told that this starter will run just fine on 12 volt without modification (just replace generator with 12v) is that true? Any held appreciated and please remember I am a tractor newbie and really don"t know diddly about this thing. Thanks.

In the past I have pulled the starter out of its hole and grounded to tractor and put juice to the starter to see it it turns over. Hang on to the starter if you try this. You can also check to see if the starter drive is working also.

Chances are your battery is not charged or shot or your battery cables are either corroded or shot. Cables MUST be clean, bright, and tight!

Brett, I agree with Old. First you gotta determine if the engine is stuck (remove plugs n see if engine will turn over by hand or rockign wheels in high gear) and then worry about if the starter n drive will crank her over.

Its true a 6 volt starter will work on 12 volts, but if you wanna fully convert from a 6 to a 12 volt system its a lil more complicated. That involves the battery, of course, possibly simply a 12 volt VR on the existing generator, changing to a 12 volt coil or else add an external series voltage dropping ballast resistor and change the lights.

John T,

Thanks for the info. The tractor already had a 12v generator and battery when I bought it. I don't know about the coil but it started initially. Anyway, the lights arn't hooked up so I'm not concerned about that. I just didn't want to damage the starter with 12v.

Have you tried to turn the engine over with the hand crank?? If you can't turn it with the hand crank it could be a couple things. I'd pull the starter and see if you can turn the engine. Some times the starter drive will jump out in a way that it locks every thing up. If you can't turn it over with the starter out then I have to ask have you checked to oil and did you run it low on oil.

The hand crank shaft is bent so no I can"t try the hand crank. I pulled the started out qand the plugs and can now turn the read tire in high gear. I can see the flywheel turning and it doesnt require much effort now. However I put the starter back in and it still locks-up when it spins out to engage the flywheel. I can"t turn the flywheel by hand if thats what you mean.

Sounds like you have a bad starter drive/bendex and or the ring gear on thw flywheel is bad. Or if its like the one on my WD you have the starter in wrong

How is it possible to have the starter in wrong? It seems like there is only one way to put it in with only one mounting bolt.

Yes but if the bolt doesn't go in where it should then it can set in wrong and that will bind up the starter and cause problems. Been there done that more then once
