I have a 1950 Model B (6 volt, positive ground)that I want to convert to a 12 volt negative ground system. Can anyone give me advice about what kind of alternator works best on a Model B (i.e. GM internal regulator, Ford with external regualtor, etc.), and how the wiring is run from the alternator through the ammeter to the battery? Also, which one matches up best for pulley size?

I want to make sure that I get this right the first time.

Not that I dislike Fords, but the GM internal regulator alternator is the easiest to connect. No regulator wiring to do, and no need to find a place to put the regulator. The pulley from the generator should fit with no problem on either brand of alt. On the GM alt, connect the battery terminal of the alt to the wire on the battery terminal of the cutout relay on the generator. To the best of my knowledge, terminal 1 on the alt goes directly to the battery, and 2 goes to the ignition switch. It will work either way, but if it is backward, the alt will run down the battery when the engine is off. Also, you'll need to get a diode to isolate the alt from the ignition coil. If you don't, the engine won't shutoff with the switch. Finally, when reversing battery polarity, reverse gauge polarity, or it will read discharge instead of charge. Hope this helps. Brian

I have a WD45 converted and also a WD converted. Both tractors I have used the Delco Alternator with built in regulator. Auto Zone sells these for about 28 bucks. For some reason on the WD I had to use a DPST toggle switch to keep the tractor from running after turning it off, but the WD45 worked just fine with the existing key switch. Also, when I tried the same alternator on my Ford 9N it runs down the battery. I haven't installed the diode yet on the Ford. If you go the the Ford N board and search for 12 volt conversions you can even find schematics pictured that you can use.

Hey Dave, I can't get your link to work. I'm curious to see if I'm right with the two wire connector. Is the diode on the switch tractor good? You can check it with a test light. It should light only one way. Have a good day. Brian

I forgot to address your other question. It is a little difficult to explain the wiring here so I would advise you to simply follow the wiring diagram from whatever car you pirate the alternator from. Most repair manuals have the basics in them. If you use a Ford alternator, be sure to use the diagram for the Ammeter equipped cars as the "idiot light" equipped cars used a different wiring system. I'm doing a WD-45 right now. I've already done two WD's. I use the older Ford alternators only because I've parted out 15 or twenty Fords and I've got lots of alternators. The newest thing I guess, is the one-wire alternators. I hear they are a breeze! One thing I have found out about the Ford Alternators (I don't know about the others) is that the A-C Pulley fits perfectly on the Ford alternator. The A-C pulley and shaft are keyed and the Ford isn't, but that doesn'seem to make any difference at all. I've been using one for about five years without a single problem. Brian G.
