Allis B - Manifold plate seal

On the manifold I have there is a small metal plate on the front which is held in place with two bolts. I have removed the plate for cleaning but notice it has no gasket. Can someone tell me if there is a gasket for this plate or perhaps it's a case of Gasket Gum. Currently the exhaust is blowing out through the gap quite badly.

if you are talking about the square plate on the side of the manifold that has the motor data (speed, timing) stamped on it, then you have a problme. there is no hole in the manifold behind the cover. your manifold must have a rotted out area.----- --- i do not know of any other "plate" on the manifold that is bolted on, the manifold is a one piece part from the factory. you might try cleaning the rust away from the hole area, covering with a muffler cement, letting it dry and then cover with the data plate. a new manifold might also be in order.

That>Link plate is a seperate item on mine. It's a duel fuel manifold but why it has to be bolted on like that I have no idea.

Grennie--- my old B has a 1942 manifold just like that. the area inside is for heat transfer between the hot gas and the air inlet. they are anot tied together, just heat thru the steel. Look close at the "leak" and see what it is. my plat is a sheetmetal cover with timing, etc stamped on the tin. two bolts just hold it on loose, no gas inside, no gasket.

The parts manual for my WC with dual fuel manifold does not show a gasket between the cover plate and manifold.

For the WC I took a flat board and some sandpaper (both larger than the opening) and sanded both mating surfaces smooth.
