Complete rebuild on engine, compression test 120 psi, installed mag and will not fire, some smoke and light puff out exhaust. The dist. system runs the motor fine. Set up the mag and turned the engine by hand and the spark to number one was just after TDC on the compression stroke. The mag has been overhauled and not taked apart by people who dont know any thing about mags.

I agree with the others that you should make sure you have spark at the plug with those wires on the mag. Make sure you have fire at the mag too. If you took the cap off and got the dist. rotor gears out of time it won't fire right. Need the C mark on dist. rotor gear inside mag lined up with the beveled teeth on magnet rotor shaft. Also could be problems if they didn't replace worn impulse parts. Ran across this recently with another fellows mag and those parts weren't replaced and knocked out the bearings in mag right away. You should also run a solid metallic core spark plug wire and non resistor spark plugs with the mag. Carbon core wires are no good at all on a mag.

A magneto should fire just after TDC when hand cranking due to the lag in the impulse coupling. As soon as it fires the impulse kicks out and the timimg advances the number of degrees of lag in the coupling, in the case of a FMJ for a B I believe tha is 30 degrees.

Hi Rick,

I am not sure what your definition of "just after" is. When cranking by hand, #1 plug should fire (mag trip) when #1 piston is at TDC on compression, not after. If the engine runs with a distributor but doesn't with the mag when you are sure you have the mag timed to the engine this way, then, by process of elimination, the problem would appear to in the mag. That would suggest that even though the mag has been "overhauled", there is still a problem with it. Have you actually checked the mag for spark at #1 plug with the plug pulled so you can see it?
