I could use some help from the experts. Its a 1957 model with a shiter that has a groove on both sides of the shifter ball. It locks up in second gear. I'm not sure how but it does. I have had the shifting casting off several times in the last two days and rebuilt the forks. I definately have been aligning the shifting forks into the proper place when I reassemble. I have welded up the shifter knob, but I an not sure what the orginal looks like. I have another WD45 but it's shifter is a different style ( curved shifter will only one groove on the ball). I even have switched detent springs thinking it was a weak spring. What am I overlooking?

I would appreciate your help.

Dave

Go back a few pages for a discussion I had with Will Herring on a similar problem. Normally the WD shifter has only one groove, and the WD45 had two- more stability.

Hi JMS,

I followed that discussion very closely and tried to fix it. My shifter has the curve and two slots. I did everything I could think of other than something flexing in the trasmission., but I don't think anything can. My only option I have now is to try a different shifter housing off of my other WD45, but that shifter is curved and only has one slot. If this would fix the issue then I know it is the shifter, forks or casting. What else could it be?I putz with this tractor over the weekend and no improvements ? Any Idea

You say it locks up in 2nd gear- do you mean that the tractor stays in 2nd, you can drive it ok in 2nd, but not shift to another gear because the shifter just flops around and will not go in another? If that is the case, then the lower end of the shifter has disengaged itself from the slots it should be in- because the lower end of the shifter is worn. Granted, each fork slot may be worn as well, but if you look down in the tower and they line up with each other- they may still work ok if you build up the end of the shifter. Building it up bigger than original will compensate for fork slot wear. I've never seen a curved shifter with only one slot- maybe they used that when they first made the change to the constant-mesh tranny, and went to a double slot to stabilize it- I imagine there is more pressure on the shifter because of the curve in it. Personally I like the curved lever much better than the straight WD lever.

Oops, Here is what I meant to say. When shifting from 2nd gear to another gear. The transmission locks up and I cannot move. The fork rail is always in 2nd gear when the transmission locks up. At first I thought that there was some play in between the 1/2nd rail and the 3/4th rail so the shifter could actually slip in between the rails and leave the tractor in 2nd gear. I have welded the forks and tightened the gag so I don't see how it could possibly to it now.. But some how the shifter either jumps out of rail when in 2nd Gear or leave the shifter rail in 2nd gear.. I have examined both the older WD45 shift lever and the one off the 57 but they look different as I earlier stated. The length is the same from the ball to the end of the lever. When the tractor is in nuetral. I can feel the shifter drag ever so slightly accoss the center fork when move from 1/2 to reverse so I don't know if the lenght is an issue. Does this help explain what is occuring?

My '53 WD45 had two slots in the ball. If your tractor is in second and does not move- and the 1st and 2nd rail is the far right- then which other rail is moved, causing the gears to be jammed? Never had that problem- I could always drive either forward or reverse when the shifter popped out.

Yes it is the shift rail on the far right and "always" in the forward position when the shifter leaves the slot. Now I am begining to doubt myself about the rest. I believe you are correct. I remember moving the shifter into Reverse and the tractor did move forward not reverse, but many times as I tried to figure this out by removing the total shifting mechinism and re-installing. Shifting and driving the tractor back and forth and when the problem occured. I do remember that when I released the clutch the engine will stall or bog down. That indicated the tractor shifter rails was in 2nd gear but the shifter was not. I took the shifter lever out of the casting and the rail would be in 2nd gear. ?

Did you go to Hutchinson to the orange show?

Still sounds like the shift lever popped out of position. Bad bottom end. Yes- I was at Hutch for 4 hours - hips ands legs gave out- boss ran his truck into me 2 1/2 years ago, had the workmen's comp hearing on Thursday- going to a state hearing in 4-6 months. Will not take $1500 for a lifetime settlement like WC thought I would accept. WC orthopaedist said it was a 'temporary contusion'. Anyway- on to tractor problems..... ...

Sorry to hear about your accident. glad to see you did not give in to WC.

Do you think it is the bottom of my shift lever that is the problem? It had a different look than my other WD45. In fact last light I started to take off the shifting mechanizim and swap them on the tractors. Only way I know to narrow down the source of the issue. I'm baffled

thanks for your help!

WC question was a no-brainer- wouldn't even bother to cash that check. No sympathy for them- they had the chance to opt out a year ago by just giving a written letter of denial of treatment, and my Blue Cross would pick up everything. Waited 10 weeks, got nothing- it's attorney time! Anyway- the bottom end of the shifter (new) looks like an upside down pyramid, with the tip cut off. That's why I referred to it in the discussion with the other poster as a tapered wedge. It also sits at an angle compared to the plane of the curved lever. Irregardless of that, it still needs to be large enough to make up for wear of the slots. I'm no expert- just haggled with mine for a couple of years, and ended up doing grinding and fitting several times along with a couple of buildups. I'm not far from you- N of Lfd- maybe I'll be in the area sometime and will look at yours. Mine might be fixed- won't know until it pops out again.

I solved the problem I think. I did put on the other shift tree and it works!! Now I need to locate a used one in decent shape. The one I removed did have a heck of a lot of where where the ball on the shiter is seated. The ball on the shifter had alot of wear as well. I know there is a guy just west and north of Lfd that had quite a few Allis's. I marrier a girl from Lfd as well. Do you know any Fjerstads?

Thanks again for your help. Now I need to fix the other tractor ( I had the head off)
