I have a sickle mower attached under my B. I am not sure what the model is. My problem is the very end of the bar clogs up, as the shoe is loose. Someone has put a regular bolt that just turns, and will not tighten. There are two bolts attaching the shoe, and they are different sizes. My tractor is four hours away, can anyone tell me what size these two bolts are, and where I can get tem? Also, I would like to put a new ladger plate on the shoe, but can not figure out how to take the old one out. Where can you get a new ledger plate for the shoe if you could replace it.I would like to buy the whole shoe assembly, if someone has one. Thanks in advance.

Ken,

It's an odd size alright. It's a 15/32" plow bolt. I think it's a plow bolt. It has a slightly crowned head but the crown is of no importance. The overall length is 1.3". The hole on the bar and shoe is not big enough for 1/2". I think a 7/16" plow bolt would work OK but even they would be hard to find outside of mail order from a place like McMaster Carr. Here's what it looks like:

The square measures 0.46". I didn't pull both bolts but they appear to be the same size on my B/C belly mower.

Well the 15/32" bolt makes a lot of sense... I guess they used them several places... I had to drill and easy out the bolt out of the back of the inside shoe (the one that goes thought one of the four holes in the sort of shoe rider plate). I was never able to figure out what was really supposed to be there... I fished a 3/8" though and called it good...

I read your post again, and answered my own question. I just assumed whoever put the ones that are in there now, knew what they were doind, and they were different sizes. Thanks again Rod. it is nice to have contact with someone who has what you are working on. Ken Seigle

I just checked a 7/16" plow bolt in that hole and it works fine. The square keeps it from turning just as it should. I am still amazed that those bolts seem to be 15/32". That's not a standard thread. I miked them and also tried a 7/16" nut on but it was a definite no-go. I know mine are original and I am quite positive no metrics were used back in the '40s. The thread pitch is 14 tpi just like a 7/16" bolt but the major diameter measures 0.448" - too big for 7/16". Weird. All the guard bolts are 7/16" coarse thread so those two at the end being such mongrels doesn't make sense. I note that, unlike all the other bolts, those two bolts are not listed at all in the parts manual that I can see. Also unusual.

Take care of your diabetes. I was diagnosed a few years back with typeII but I have been fortunate enough to be able to keep it in good control just by being careful with diet.

Thanks for the follow up. I will try and find some 7/16 " plow bolts. Yeah, who knows, maybe Allis Chalmers got a deal on some left over bolts from europe. Thanks for taking the time to try the bolt for me. It is along way over there to have the wrong bolt.

Doing better now that I am getting this diabetes under control. I have not been posting for about two years. My tractor is over on my place at the coast, and the renter has been using it. It was nice to get back over and make contact with it. Thanks for the reply. You make it easy. Are the two bolts that hold on the shoe supposed to be the same size?
