I recently purchased a d-17 series iv and am
not able to get the hydraulics to work. I drained the pan that the intake line(to pump)comes from and only a quart of fluid came out. I thought there should have been enough fluid to reach the intake. The only fill hole I found
is neart the shift. The stick there is showing full. Have I missed something? Richard

The indicator for the Power Director and Hydraulics on a Ser IV is to the upper left of the shift lever. (not the right...that's the transmission/differential) It has a short hex top.
Yes, there should be a LOT more fluid than a quart.
If you have checked the correct level indicator, & it's full, then there's a good chance the sump has never been removed from the tractor. It's possible that the screen is entirely plugged. Requires removal. There's also a strong magnet inside that catches metal particles b/4 entering the pump.

I HAVE ALLREADY REMOVED SUMP AND CLEANED THE
MAGNET. IT HAD A METALLIC PASTE ON IT. THE FLUID IS DARK BUT NOT REALLY BAD.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. I AM GOING OUTSIDE NOW AND CHECK THE "REAL" LEVEL INDICATOR. RICHARD

Gatz I had to buy a wrenc for the hex nut. The level was low. For some reason however when put the fluid in I never got any down in the hyd. sump. I ran the tractor a short time to with no results. I then filled the hydraulic sump from the suction pipe after taking it loose at the pump. This worked and I got a good flow from the pump. However now my lift goes up, but will not come down again. The only way it comes down is to turn
the tractor off. then it slowly goes back down. I bought a book and tried adjusting the position and other lever they talk about, but had
no results. If you have had this problem let me know anything you think would work. Thanks, Richard

I had the same problem with my Series IV. On the back right side of the control valves just under the flat peice of metal is a screw. It has two nuts on it. One is normal and the other is rounded on top to cover the screw. Take the top nut off an loosen the bottom one. It will allow you to back the screw out and let the pressure go from the pump. I am not a profesional and this isn't technical language, but I learned it from a good tractor mechanic. Good luck.
