D 12 engine Rough running.

Just have a question I just purchased this D12 and was mowing with it this evening and the engine will sometimes break up and other times thru out the same area and under the same strain run perfect. The the engine will surge-surge and almost stall and then run for aprox. 10 seconds or so and then surge another time or 2 and then smooth out and operate great. I noticed some junk in the fuel bowl and cleaned it out but it still continued intermittently sometimes running great for 15 or 20 minutes before acting up again. I'm going to take off the the fuel bowl and drain the tank and see how much junk comes out and check for blockage at strainer to fuel bowl. Just wondering if anybody had any other ideas? Could the float in the carb be sticking or operating to rich ? Thanks for any HELP!!!

Had the same problem with my D12. Put on a new fuel bowl because the one that was on it wasn't original. Replaced the fuel lines and rebuilt the carburetor. Still had the problem. It all boiled down to the float in the carburetor wasn't set right. Hope your problem is as simple.

I finally got fed up with the exact same problem last night with my D 12. Only my problem seems more consistent than yours. I was going to ask the same questions this morning. I will take Old's advice and see how it goes. Not looking forward to it though. I'm a tune-up sort of mechanic not a re-builder.

Ive had that happen on more then one tractor, some times chokeing it clears it up for a long time some times not. You probably have a little junk floating around in the carb and it gets in the wrong place at the right time and then you have the problem. Then after a little bit it gets sucked up in to the engine or fall back to the bottom. Either way best way to fix the problem is rebuild the carb.
