Gatz had the torques down pat. The 262 and it"s older brethern the 230 were very weak in the cylinder head and head sealing departments. Careless installation will lead to another teardown shortly. Yes there is a pattern and you need to follow it to the letter, it was in the gasket set I just put in my 230 and should have been in yours. Make sure your sleeves are at least even with the deck. Spec is even to .005 above I believe. Make sure the head is flat. If you have head bolts instead of studs they need to be replaced, very expensive at AGCO but there is an aftermarket source. Use no sealers and the head and block need to be free of oil. I use brake cleaner. Set the gasket on first then the fire rings go inside. Torque to spec and per the pattern. Run engine to operating temp, shut off and let cool completely down. Then retorque, this is a PITA since the rocker shaft and the thermostat housing must be removed but dont neglect this step or half do it. Sorry for the rocket science but it will save you buying several gaskets and some cuss"en.

for the 262 Diesel prior to Engine s/n 105101
use 95 ftlb

Starting at 105101, use 105 ftlb

Obviously, a pattern is to be followed.

If you want, I can send a picture of the sequence; but it's just alternating from side to side starting in the center of the head and working outward.

After initial tightening, start and run engine to operating temperature.
Re-torque head bolts. Set valves (hot) to .010 on intake, .019 on exhaust.
