I just finished restoring a1951 A.C. W.D.wide front .After puting back together and puting a new 6volt battery in it I had to wait on parts before I could start the old girl up when they finaly arrived I went to start the tractor and the battery was dead.So I put in all new wireing switches checked for any loose or frayed wires none.Now it will not even start by being pulled started while its being pulled it acts like it wants to start but as soon as we stop it also stops .So I come to you my fellow experts what could be wrong I"M at the end of my ropes on this one . If it's a '51, it should have a magneto, but even if it has been converted to a distributor, this would apply: if it sounds like it's trying to fire but will not keep running when you stop pulling it- you may have the plug wires off by one hole. If it has a mag, sometimes #1 plug wire is at the top left, sometimes at the top right- depending how it's put together. If it has a distributor, clamp it in about the middle position, double check that number one wire has spark at the right time, and with fuel and spark it should at least start.

My B had not run in a year. Found points needed to be lightly sanded. But you will need some power to the coil for ignition, inless the alternator is turning over fast enough to make the required currrent.

Hook a voltmeter to the feed (non-distributor) side of the coil and look for voltage when you pull start it. If not 6v, the alternator isn't up to snuff. Get the battery charged and clean the points. once running the alternator can be diagnosed.

If it's a mag clean and gap the points.

Also check that the carb is getting enough gas. I drain all the old gas out and leave the carb drain open while putting in fresh gas until enough gas was flowing to make me happy).

suck squeeze bang blow, air fuel spark. I used to htink it was rocket science but now I know better.

If it has been coverted to a distributor ignition, you need to charge the dead battery. Depending upon the degree to which you disassembled the engine, you may not have timed the ignition and/or camshaft properly. Recheck the position of the spark plug wires first.

do all of what Jerry said, then check to c if u have fire at the points, make sure u have gas in it and the gas is turned on. If it has am gen. onit and it works when u put the tractor it will charge and u will have current for the ignition. But if the battary is no good when u put the tractor the current fron the gen. will burn the points up.
