B PTO type

Does any one know how the PTO operated on the B? I've heard that it was live, and I've also heard that it was not. Since the tractor was in production for a long time, I'm thinking that it started with a transmission PTO, and later was switched to a live PTO.

Is this correct? If so, does anyone know what year/sn that it occured? Thanks.

the PTO runs off the transmission top shaft, so the motor clutch must be engaged (your foot off the pedal) to have pto running. you can have the transmission ir or out of gear, font make any difference as long as your motor clutch is engaged.

The B and C tractors never did have live pto or hydraulics. Your confusion may have come from the fact that the CA replaced the C and had live pto via a simple hand clutch that "broke" the RH side rear axle allowing the differential to spin. Sorta like when one rear wheel of your car is on ice so your car doesn't move. The B was continued along with production of the CA, but never did have this option. Unfortunately it was replaced by the D10 which didn't have live pto or hydraulics either for the first few years. Later D10 models had a true independent pto and hydraulics.

Thanks for the information.

If I understand the system on the CA, then you would be able to stop the tractor with the PTO engaged, but you could not change gears because the engine and transmission are still engaged, it is just that the rear differential is spinning. Is that correct?

Correct.....foot clutch must be used to change gears.
