Never restored a tractor, so full of questions. All advice welcome.

I just acquired my grandfather's tractor. I am planning on restoring it, starting with the mechanical stuff. There are appearance items that will come later like new fenders, rims, tires, hood, battery box, paint.

Issues are:
1. Hand clutch is completely nonfunctional.
2. Foot clutch does not grab until almost all the way out.
3. Leaks oil from bottom of engine, transmission and Hydraulics/PTO (have not looked yet to see which).
4. Parking brake mechanism frozen
5. Snap coupler needs some work - appears to not operate well. 6. Generator did not produce enough juice to keep battery up, so my brother put an alternator on it. From what I have read, the light switch was 3 position to include a higher output. That switch is completely frozen. Wonder if that switch were operational would it make a difference.

I have a Service Manual and Operating Instructions/Repair Parts Illustrations. I found a Parts Manual on ebay for about $30. Is it worth it to buy one of them?

Still has excellent compression. Starts every time and runs pretty good. I learned to drive on this tractor, and remember helping put up hay at 8 years old and driving this tractor. I am excited about restoring it. Thanks in advance

I'd get a shop manual or an IT manual. IT manuals are available in most farm stores for about $20. The parts manual is helpful if you need to buy parts and sometimes the explosions will help describe how things work.

If the tractor moves, the hand clutch is functional. The lever may be useless because the engage/disengage parts are worn out completely and no longer have an effect on the clutch. Your description of the foot clutch suggests it is worn out.

Once you've put an alternator on the tractor, the three position switch would only be used to turn the lights on and off. Any push pull switch will easily replace it.

Sounds like a fun project. Sentimental value is a great motivator.

How does an IT manual differ from what I already have?

Your first post said you have "Service Manual and Operating Instructions/Repair Parts Illustrations." The service manual will describe how to care for your tractor - fluids etc. The operating instructions and repair parts manual explains how to use the tractor and shows a lot of the parts (usually without part numbers). The IT manual tells how to repair things. It describes how to disassemble the parts, how to repair them and how to reassemble. Allis made manuals called "Repair Manuals" which served a similar purpose. You have two of the four Allis manuals. The fourth is a parts manual with a complete parts breakdown for the entire tractor along with the part numbers. I have IT manuals for all of my Allis tractors because they are inexpensive and very helpful. I have a few Allis Repair Manuals and a couple of the Repair Parts books (D-17 and D-14). Don't have either of these for my WD's or WD-45.

Parts manuals are very useful. Shows how things go together.

Retail price for the parts manual is around $30.00. You can purchase parts manuals from a number of sources. Try you local tractor/farm supply store.
