I hooked up a manure spreader to our d-19 and it will turn it, but it took a long time to get it going. I let the clutch all the way up and nothing happened for 30 seconds or so, then it slowly started to turn and picked up speed until it was running. No matter where the power director is, the tractor will still just creep ahead slightly with the clutch all the way up. Is there anything like changing the gear oil that would help, it is full but slightly brown probably from moisture due to a cracked shift boot. Could that be anything to do with it? Is there any clutch adjustment anywhere? The tractor worked fine and ran the pto fine when parked last fall, I just don't get it. I'ld hate to let such an amazing tractor go to waste. Here's an odd problem that showed up when I was going to replace the clutch on my D17 SerIV that I had bought at an auction.
It was slipping very bad and sometimes would not release enough to change gears; I just figured the clutch was gone.
After splitting the tractor, it became clear what had happened.
Well, yes the clutch was gone, but the reason for it being "hard to dis-engage, if at all" was that the return line from the injector pump had a pin-hole leak just ahead of the fueltank and all that fuel just leaked all over and mixed very well with dirt creating a big mess inside the clutch housing. Talk about a gummed-up situation. (there are openings right at the top of the housing where the engine bolts on)
That was about 2 years ago, and since then, I've been restoring the tractor. Lots of $$, but it'll be nice when I get it done.

The pto would be a mechanical coupling to the engine via the foot clutch. Taking that long to ramp up to speed shows that the problem is with the foot clutch. Might have gotten some oil on it setting over the winter. Take the inspection cover off underneath and see what you can see. It might just need some adjusting. You might be able to spray some degreaser up in there if it looks oily, if that doesn't do it it is time to replace it.

It's been my experience that oily clutches become grabby, sticky, and don't release, rather than slipping.

Perhaps a clutch adjustment would be inorder though, as well as that carb or brake cleaner to clean the plates up..

I'm not familiar with that model.. but was speaking in general about oily clutches.

got a manual? I'll bet it shows how to adjust the clutch...
