I recently purchased a tractor from a friend of mine. He maintains it is a 1936 proto-type of the 'B' tractors that went into production in 1937. The serial number 101-036 seems to suggest that it was made in 1949. There is no 'B' designation in front of the serial number. I've been talking to a couple of guys about this on the net. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can prove one way or the other. Thanks for any help. Dennis Forbes

If you have foot operated brake pedals then you probably have a 49. Older B's have hand levers for the brakes. Hope that helps.

The first 101 prototype Allis-Chalmers B tractors used a Waukeshau engine. Can't find my parts manual right now, but I thought it was a flat head engine as opposed to the AC OHV.

Hi Dennis,
I recently picked up a 1950 model B. I don't know the year they changed over, but I am quite sure all 49's would have an electric starter and a 37 would require the use of your left arm. Hope this helps!

Dennis,

You could have a tractor with a replacement transmission case. The transmission case came without a serial number, and the dealer stamped in the old number. Maybe he only put in the number and not the "B" designation. His stamp set may have included only numbers with no letters.
