D17 power steering trouble

I have been helping a friend with his D17. He wanted to remove the oil pan. In order to do so, we removed the wide front wheel/axle assembly and the power steering unit. We would not have had to take the power steering apart, but we did. After putting it all back together, the power steering would not operate. Tractor was shut down and restarted. When he tried to turn the steering wheel, it quickly spun (on it"s own) to the right and the wheels also turned to the extreme right and a lot of oil began spraying out somewhere around the power steering unit. Anyone haven a clue as to what"s happening here?

I've not had this experience on my D-17. But I had a similar experience on my Ford 901 when I reassembled it after building some new parts for it. When I reassembled, a pin slipped out of position and jammed the valve in an open position causing the wheel to crank hard left. I took it apart again, discovered my error, fixed it with a new pin (old one was destroyed), and reassembled a second time taking considerably more care. It works perfectly now. Your problem is probably something similar.
