What can I pull with model B

I just put up 7 acres of loose hay and decided I have had enough of that fun. Last year hay was not as good of a yield and only brought in 4 acres total as compared to this years 15 so it was easy enough. I have two A-C B's that my wife inhereted. Is there any baler that I can pull with these or am I looking at a new tractor. A good portion of the farm is hilly. In the past they used a NH Super 66 that was engine driven. Something in the engine blew very badly and it will cost me $800 to replace the engine, which always overheated anyway. I want to get rid of that one and switch to PTO driven, but am not sure of what I can work with the tractors I have.

I believe the 1st gear ground speed is too fast for your older engine equipped balers, and could not handle any hilly terrain.I do use my B for raking and teddering.

Find one of the old AC roto-balers and that B will work it just fine. I had one years ago and pulled it with a B

If you could find a IH baler with a Wisconsin engine you could get it done. You would need additional weight added to keep the plunger from pushing the tractor around. My Oliver 66 at 3000 pounds does a good job on a power takeoff NH baler but sure jerks you in the seat when sitting still. I baled about an acre with my Simplicity 9523 which is the same as the the Allis 5020. It worked but I twisted the shaft on the over run clutch when I hit a large bunched up windrow. that stopped the plunger. A tractor weighing 4000 pounds and up would be a better choice for a lot of baling but with your small amount a hay it doesn"t justify a large tractor unless you want one. You could get by with the B.

Pulling vs braking. in reply to Vince H, 07-05-2005 06:17:57
A WD or WD45, or preferably a D-17 would be a whole lot better to pull a PTO baler. There are lots of reasons for this.

The B is a tough little tractor for its size, but it"s just too small for that baler even with a baler engine. You could pull it ok, but the tractor is not heavy enough to control the baler on the hills.

That"s my story and I"m sticking to it. Your mileage may vary.

How much does a WD weigh? Around 4000 lbs?

Nebraska tests indicated something like that. Maximum pull was with a lot of weight added.
