I'll assume we are talking about a standard 2 brush genny...All you basically need to know is the voltage ( 6/12 etc.. ) and circuit type ( A circuit / B circuit ). If you can't find an OEM one.. I'll bet you can get one from another genny to make it kick over.

You can tell circuit type by looking at old VR. On the old vr on the bottom you will find a bias resistor. it may be hooked from Armature to field.. If so.. this is a B circuit type... Field is internally grounded, and needs power to charge. Initial charge current is from the residually magnetized field shoes feeding thru the bias resistor to the field. If the bias resistor is hooked from the ground frame to the field, it is Acircuit type... field is internally hot ( connected to armature), and needs ground to charge.. bias resistor provides some of that ground.... After charging starts.. cutout pulls in and the vibrating contacts start doing the regulatin'.
