Can anyone explain how to use a timing light to adjust the timing on a WC with Magnito Ignition. I have never used a timing light before.
Thanks

Agree with Dan.

If you still want to use the timing light use the search function, upper right of this web page. Search "WC magneto" there is something like 177 posts on how to time the magneto to the engine.

Gene
I have read most of the remarks on how to time a Magneto and in fact have my tractor running OK. I would however like to learn how to use a Timing Light so that is what my post was about. How do you attach the Timing Light for final adjustment? I know I don't need to use one but I'd just like to know how to use one.
Thanks
Bud

Bud. Most timing light have three cords. Two are connected to the battery. The 3rd either clips around the #1 plug wire or is connected in series between the #1 plug wire and the #1 plug.

Timing the WC. You are going to need a seperate 12 volt source (battery) - most current timing lights are 12 volts. Hook the timing light to the battery and the #1 plug wire.

Timing marks. The "F" fire, timing mark, is on the back side of the flywheel. Using the hand crank, turn the engine until the bolt holding the pulley to the front of the crankshaft is in the 11:00 o'clock position. This should put the "F" mark in the center of the inspection opening (under the bellhousing) bottom of the tractor. Clean off the "F" mark with a wire brush then take a piece of chalk and rub the F. - This is your aiming mark.

Start the tractor. Squeeze the trigger of the timing light. The light flashes when the #1 cylinder fires. Aim the timing light at the "F" mark on the back side of the flywheel. The tractor is in time when, at fast idle, the "F" is centered in the inspection opening.

Bud, I hope this helps. This is one of those jobs that takes less time to do then to explain how to do it.

Gene

Forget the timing light. Rotate the magneto back and forth while the engine is running high idle. Somewhere in the middle it will run the fastest and with the least laboring. Tighten the bolts there.
