1953 WD Info request

I have a WD that was purchased new by my father and has been on the family farm ever since. It is now in the restoration stage. According to the Serial Number, WD146157, Engine WD357413PA, it is one of the last manufactured.

I have been told by some farmers who are diehard AC fans that this tractor was dubbed a WD40 by some and that it actually has a WD45 transmission in it. It does have the curved shifter. Is there anything to this?

Also, does any one a definitive SN listing to tell just where in the manufacturing order this one sits. I only have a listing of ranges by years.

Thanks for your help.

WD40 was an International / Farmall designation - first diesel wheeled (as opposed to Caterpillar) tractor in production mid 30's as I recall. The non-diesel was a WK40. As far as I can tell it was never an AC designation - though it may have been a nickname given to an aftermarket mod as was suggested by other response.

As you may know from books, first WD with curved shifter was WD127007 in late 1952 and last WD was WD145506 in late 1953.

Your serial numbers would make yours one of the last 450 as you noted. Highest set of WD serial numbers I have come across was Tractor WD146541 with Engine WD357520PA. Best. Ed

According to Dean's book, the first WD with the constant mesh transmission and the curved shift lever was in 1952, Serial number 127008. The last WD built was serial number 146606, in 1953, which coincides with the first WD45 built, 1953, serial number 146607.

You are correct that some of the last WD tractors had WD-45 transmissions. Allis scheduled the WD transmission build short and just used those for the 45 to finish the production run.

I have heard of the WD40 but not for a last WD's. I heard it in regard to replacing the stock cylinders with 4 1/8 M&W. It boosted the horsepower to over 40 and made it pull almost like a 45. This was not an Allis designation.

Not sure just when the change, but yes the transmission change came about in the later WDs. If you happen to have the owners manual you should be able to look in the parts section and it figure when the change took place. If not a good parts man can tell by looking in parts book. I never heard of th WD40 don't mean some didn't call it that though.
