I have a 1949 B model that was converted to 12 volts neg ground a couple years ago. I replaced the resistance wire with 14 gauge and used a 12 volt coil that I found in my shed. It seemed to work fine but I didn't use the tractor much until recently when I really put it to work. I put all new plugs, wires, points, cap, button, condenser(OEM equivilent) etc. but the points burnt in a few days. A new set burnt just as quick. Some tell me that I need a ballast resistor like the ones used in the old chrysler vechicles, but others tell me that I just need to get a condenser to match the coil.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think coils come with internal resistor useing no resistor or resistor wire or with out a resistor meaning there has to be a resistor put in the wiring some how

I agree with the others.. sounds like that 12v coil is really a 6v coil.

Get a REAL 12v coil.. like a NAPA IC-14SB it needs no external resistance as it's primary is alread in the 2.8-3.2 ohm range. Way better KV than using a 6v coil and a ballast ressitor...

Even most 12v coils need a ballast resistor or a resistance wire. Try an 18GA or 20GA wire to the coil. A lot depends on what the coil is off of.

Thanks, for your info guys. I do have a ballast resistor from an old chrysler, so I am going to try that first. I"ll let you know how it turns out.

i agree with old. your coil might have been 12 volt, but it had a resistance wire withi it to drop to 6 volts, you need a new coil, or a resistor in line. make sure coil is connected bat to + and - to the point

Sounds like you have a 6 volt coil not a 12 volt. Which means you need a ballast resistor, thats almost the only thing that causes point to burn other then leaveing the ignition on with the engine not running for long periods of time
