My wife was changing spark plugs on our B last night will I cleaned the sediment bowl. She showed me the first plug and the carbon build up was so bad the thing looked like it had scales. I was kind of thinking it might be from too much lead additive, but then she showed me the second plug. This one had just as much carbon on it, but also a little bit of oil. I didn't see the other two since I had to run to pick up parts that I broke. This was on Champion spark plugs that I have since learned to never use again.

I am thinking I have worn rings if there is oil on the plug. Would this also contribute to the carbon build up. What's kind of odd is that the tractor does not have a smoke or go through oil real fast. The engine does have a valve tap, could there be oil getting in through a stuck valve or is it more than likely worn rings? What else would cause a lot of carbon build up?

Carbon is generally caused by the gas mixture being too rich. I don't think that the B has a power valve adjustment - just a fixed orifice. You may want to pull off your air cleaner and give the mesh a thorough cleaning. Once the mesh is clean, put fresh oil in the cup when you reassemble. It could be there is restriction in the filter which would cause a rich mixture.

If the tractor isn't using oil and it starts OK, I wouldn't worry about rebuilding. Get the air source good and correct the carbon buildup and then reevaluate.

I have a couple of engines that have a similar probelm. One is a new Kawaski 4 wheeler that I use around the ranch. Every 3 or 4 months, the plug needs cleaning - too much carbon. And my D-14 Allis (which has a similar engine to your B) must not be idled at low RPM or carbon builds up fast. Allis Chalmers even warned about this on the D-14 - don't slow idle for extended periods. "Extended" on my D-14 is about 10 minutes. My D-14 engine is near perfect but the rpm's must be kept up.

You may want to adjust the tappets if you have tappet noise. If one is loose, others may be tight. Neither condition is good for the valves and cylinders.

Thanks for the info. When I did the tune up last night I ran a little parts cleaner through the air cleaner and changed the oil in it so hopefully that will help with the problem some. I think it is mainly from idling too low for extended periods of time. There was time this spring where it would idle for almost a half hour while loading up a trailer of wood. I will have to remember to keep the idle higher from now on. Once again thank you.
