I have a Disability and would like to adapt a tractor to my use. I would be able to use hand clutch but not foot. My understanding is that hand clutch on Wd and D-17 controls shifting and foot clutch has to do with pto? Will I be able to drive tractor without foot clutch and does anyone have ideas for adapting foot clutch so i can use other tractor functions? i am also need-ing power steering and have been told not to try and add this after market. Thanks for any input!

i would also look into a powershift tractor. There are a few in that hp size. Maybe a 3020 powershift. a low profile one maybe

If you are looking for an older tractor to use without a clutch, look at the older Internationals Hydro's, they are a little noisey, and there fuel economy when doing heavy drawbar work is not good, however with independent PTO and the hydro trans, they are excellent for lite work mowing baling and such and they work excellently with a loader

The hand clutch on the WD/WD45 provides live pto and live hydraulic power. The hand clutch on the D17 (Power Director) provides live pto and live hydraulic power as well as low range and high range ground speed. The foot clutch on these tractors is required for shifting the transmission. It would be very easy to make a hand-operated adaptation for the foot clutch on either of these tractors. Several Midwestern universities are participating in a project called 'Agrability' which assists handicapped farmers in adapting their tractors so that they can operate them with various hand controls. Do a google search for agrability, especially out of the Univ of Wisconsin- they picked up on a hand clutch I made for several JD tractors. As far as adding power steering to WD or D17 AC tractors- there is no reason why it cannot be done. Most D17s, Series 2 and later, already have it. And whoever told you about the hand clutches controlling shifting and the foot clutch controlling pto- had it bass ackwards.

Both tractors can have a hand controlled rigged up to operate the foot clutch. Of the two tractors mentioned the D-17 would be more user friendly.

Paul, I think your best option is a Ford with Select-O-Speed. It can be operated with the speed selector knob both forward and backward and you can shift on the go without the use of a clutch. You can start without a foot clutch. The transmission also does braking if you stay in gears 1-4. If you go above 4, shifting into 4 will also give braking. The PTO is a hand control as well.

I agree with DanD. A WD does require foot control.

Ford models that have Select-O-Speed would be 971, 981, 871, 881. Also there are 4000 and 3000 that have SOS but I don't know the excact model numbers. An 871 will cost a little more than a WD (almost double).

Pose your question on the Ford board.

Another issue is getting on the tractor. It may be easier to get on an 871 than a 971.

There may be later model Allis (and other) tractors with hydrostatic or fixed ratio hydraulically shifted transmissions - I just don't know about the new stuff.

Thanks for the info and quick response. I will begin looking into Fords. You mentioned a lot of models. I was hoping for something in the 40-45 HP range I will need power steering and kind of want a iight duty loader. Any model stick out? I was hoping to stay at or under $3k. So newer models are probably out. thanks for the interest.

It is difficult to shift the transmission using only the hand clutch. It runs in oil and has enough drag to cause the gears to turn when the transmission is in neutral. You really need to use the foot clutch when shifting unless you can shift very quickly from one gear to the next but you'll often have gear clash.
