Hey guys. I'm restoring an '48 A/C G serial number G 6 and I'm just about to the paint stage. I'm thinking about using a urethane enamel (at least 2 coats).
What the correct paint code number for Persian orange #1. What's ya'll opinion of my choice of paint. Thanks in advance.

Take a look through the paint and body work archives and you'll see ROd's and my other posts on this subject. Last fall I bought a bunch of persian orange and sprayed it out. My current opinion is that the correct color codes are the ppg 60080 and duponts centari YS074. In dupont my jobber claims that he can only get the YS074 in centari not nason or imron. My PPG jobber will do 60080 in either Omni (both AE and Urethan) and Concept. The Dupont Centari was going to be very close to PPG's concept in price. I feel my dupont jobber doesn't want to be bothered with these small non auto paint projects and is really sticking it to it on the price of AE's. With the ppg's I had better luck spraying out the concept than the omni. Concept cost a LOT more than the Omni, Omni runs about a $100/ gal with concept hit about 250 I think (forgot how much, no coffee yet). I'm going to be using concept on restored tractors (allis G, Case SC-4). farm tractors and implements will get Omni.

I've switched from dupont to PPG just becuase you can get the color codes for most tractor brands easily. Dupont has been a BIG pain. I'm tired of have a bunch of left over activator ect.. that I can't use because of things like persian orange not being avialible in Imron, only nason and then it's the wrong shade.

For those that are interested in the early persian orange in a DuPont product, look into YS074 in Centari (or even ChromaOne or Imron if you got the $$$) or the more economical NASON line. The color is generic and is called Spectramaster Yellow. Don't let the name fool you. From the sample sprayouts that I have seen it's a very good match and as close as you can likely get in a DuPont product. The other "official" DuPont codes, like 29047 and 655 have too much red in them to be a decent match for that early orange - at least in my opinion - and they are only available in NASON. In any event, don't take anyone's word for a color code. Once you have settled on a prospective manufacturer and color code, buy the smallest possible quantity (usually a qt except for the more expensive paints) and do a test sprayout to satisfy yourself as to color and shade. Paints are too expensive nowadays to buy a gallon or more on some word of mouth only to find it is not as good a match as you had hoped for. Mixed automotive paint is not returnable so whatever you buy, you own, even if you don't like it.

BTW, the two different persian oranges (early #1 - 60080 and late #2 - 60396) in PPG are visually compared to an original B mower belt guard here:

The early "pumpkin shade" of persian orange (PO #1 so-called) is best represented by PPG 60080, IMO. A urethane paint is an excellent choice provided you have the fresh air breathing equipment to safely apply it. It is available in a relatively high end acrylic urethane called "Concept" in PPG's Deltron line. A more cost effective product, also an acrylic urethane is PPG's "OMNI MTK" in PPG's economical OMNI line. In the case of the Concept, you'd ask for DCC60080. In the case of the OMNI you'd ask for MTK60080. Make sure you obtain the appropriate technical data sheets for the use of any product and follow all written safety instructions. The particular safety issues will be noted in fine print on the can labels for the necessary hardener or activator required for urethane products. A more detailed explanation is available in the appropriate material safety data sheet (MSDS) for the additive. Those sheets should be available from your supplier or on-line from the manufacturer.

i painted both my Bs with Delstar and they look great. It is an enamel that you add small amount of hardener to it. --- Concept may be overkill for a tractor, but i did paint a ford truck with it. Paint glows in the dark. great stuff if you can aford it.

Oh, I'll agree - PPG's Delstar is an excellent enamel - if you can find it and want to pay what I think is too much for an enamel considering the alternatives that are now available in OMNI. Delstar and DuPont's Centari are quite famous enamels over many years - both excellent, competitive paints. I can still get Centari in my area but not Delstar. No PPG jobber within a hundred miles of me stocks the mixing tints for it anymore - haven't for a number of years. Not enough demand due to refinish industry conversion to base/clear technology and high price. I suspect that tight VOC air emission regulations in some areas could also have something to do with it if Delstar still uses the same DTR reducers that were used 30 years ago. I understand that Delstar is available in the midwest at around $160 per gal - raw paint only - for orange. When you can get an OMNI acrylic urethane for half that, the cost becomes a real issue to consider. Anything but an unhardened, alkyd enamel like the old DuPont Dulux or PPG Ditzco can be considered overkill for a vintage tractor :o). As far as I know they were the OEM paints used in the '40s and '50s. Of course both of those have now gone the way of the Dodo bird and one is left with the $20-$40 per gal "tractor store" paints of similar chemistry if one is serious about OEM originality. I'm like you though and much prefer the increased durability of a modern paint chemistry. I am using OMNI MTK on my B for a couple of reasons. 1) I couldn't get Delstar locally athough that was my initial intent based on great past experience with it and 2) I couldn't find a decent match to the early persian orange in DuPont at the time. I settled on the MTK as a cost effective choice and have been very pleased with it.
