The question is this. If these are good pulling tractors how is the transmission problem overcome? What modification can be made to fix the problem. By the way, I see a 200 model with 3600 hours that also pops out of 3rd...apparently AC didn't get it quite right on the next model either.

Do new gears, bushings, bearings and clutch plates solve the problems? What is a good source for them?

Over and over I see all the discussion about the weak transmission for these tractors and how they are prone to pop out of gear...particularly in 3rd, the most used gear.

I have seen someone say that building up the shift fork to provide more positive engagement will work to solve the problem.

I now have one of these machines and most of the owners say they really like their tractors...to like them there must be reasonable fixes for the following problems, what are they? Either they fix the problems or the problems are not that bad.

1. Seal leak between the hydraulic and transmission reservoir
2. Popping out of gear
3. Leaks around the 3pt houing
4. Power shift clutch problems
5. Power shift transmission creep
6. Bad brakes
7. What else goes wrong?

Tractors are pretty bullet proof...especially the older ones. In my view they should last a lifetime and if you can replace wear parts they can be handed down for another lifetime. After so many hours and possible abuse some I expect to do some work on them.

Thanks,
CEW

A lot of the problems with jumping out of gear were caused by people "grinding" the gears. Older transmission were more tolerant of this than the constant mesh transmissions. They made some inprovements on the 200 transmission that helped.
The creep of the power director is normal for any wet clutch. Warped clutch plates make it worse.

1. Split the tractor between the transmission and powerdirector and repair the seal.

2.Take the entire transmission and rear end apart to replace the shift collars.

3. Put more oil in it(!?) One of ours leaks out of the 3pt housing, which has never worried us a whole lot. I imagine there"s a seal to replace...

4. New facings on Power Director clutches.

5. The Power Director clutches are warped, therefore need new facings or replacement.

6. Adjust them and they"ll work just fine. If not take a look at them when you have to rebuild the transmission because it pops out of gear.

7. Go out and buy yourself a single-wire Delco alternator, to put your external regulator troubles at ease.

8. Take care of your tie rods, when they get old road travel becomes a nightmare.

9. Seals in the power steering orbit motor go bad and spray fluid all over everywhere.

10. Turbocharger is gone after 5000 hours, if you dont take care of your airfilter and oil changes.

I"ll think up some more over the course of the day, but all in all, one hell of a tractor!
