On a negative ground 12 volt system do the points take voltage from the positive side of the coil or the negative?

Here it is easy if the battery is + ground the dist. side of the coil is to the +. If its - ground the dist. side is the - . The way the system works is the coil is shorted to ground when the points are closed and the coil fires or sparks when the point open.

The + comes from the ignition (ballast).

The - goes to the points terminal.
