My grandpa has an AC 170 that runs for about an hour then stops. He goes to lunch, comes back and it runs for about an hour then dies. This keeps happening. Any suggestions?

You have to narrow it down to lack of fuel or ignition. Next time it stops, loosen the plug at the bottom of the carb to see if any gas dribbles out..... ..... or give it a shot of ether to see if it starts/coughs again when cranked. That will confirm fuel flow. I suspect an electrical problem. Carry a spare spark plug with a real wide gap. When the engine dies, pull one of the wires, insert the extra plug and ground it to the block. PUT THE MACHINE IN NEUTRAL. Crank and look for a spark. If none, then it's probably the coil ALTHOUGH it could be the on-off switch.

Possibly the coil. Possibly the gas cap is not venting. Possibly the valves are adjusted too tightly. Just to add a few possibilities.

I"d bet my last dollar that the coil is bad (if it is a gas burner)

If its a gas rig I'd go with a bad coil as others have said. If diesel I'd say he needs to change the fuel filters.

A couple of things come to mind. Maybe the vent (in the filler cap) for the gas tank is plugged, or perhaps the ignition coil is faulty.

gas, or diesel?
If gas, it could be that the coil is failing when temps rise.
