I have an early Allis Chalmers B built first year of production. I have a couple of questions. First has any one ever seen cast valve cover and oil pan for the B? I found some on a B parts B this weekend and thought I would buy them thinking they might belong for the early B. Second, when I bought my B the housing where the temp gauge would normally go did not have a hole. It was the way it was cast, not plug by a farmer. Did the early B's not have a temp gauge? The hood didn't have the hold for the gauge either. And on my adventure this weekend I was able to find the early styled rims for my B.

If you have a "B" built the first year of production, you then have a 37. this model used a Waukesha engine which is entirely different than the 38 and later years, so no parts would interchange. If its 38 or newer than the parts will interchange. enjoy your "B". BOB

Anderson, the first year was 1937 and 97 tractors were built with the WAK engine. starting in 1938 they used the motor you have and built thousands per year. that motor progressed during 38-39-40 as i said with the advancement to a thermostat and gauge. Bob is right, the tractor was built from 38 to 58 with few changes, all parts will interchagne. as i said, the cast parts were made during the mid war years.

the first B did not have a thremostat.-- later they had a thermostst, but not gauge. -- final had the gauge in the housing and hole in the hood. this was the first 2-3 year timeperiod.---- the cast iron valve covers, oil pan, and some final drive pans were built during the war years when steel plate was at a premium. apparently you could use cast. maybe 1942-43.

I have a 38 B and the only diffrence that I could add is that the early B"s used I think 3 1/4" pistions while the later ones used the 3 3/8" pistions. However you the older blocks will except the larger pistons will fit. I use the larger ones when I rebuilt my B. Andrew

The early ones did have some differences from the later ones. I have a 38, sn 4211, which has the cast center front wheels that were used on and off in 38-39 according to the numbers in my parts manual. Mine also does not have a thermostat or temp gauge. Also some of the early ones used a gemmer steering box, which mine does. Seems like these boxes were only used early on and tough to come by. They 38-39 also used a cast iron belt pulley instead of stamped steel. These are just a few of the differnces i can come up with off the top of my head.
