My front wheel rims keep coming apart. It is one of those replacement rims (the only replacement rim available that I have been able to locate, new from the local tractor parts store). However these 5 lug X 4.5" rims seem to be JUNK! These rims are clearly not as heavy duty as the original rims. My other front wheel rim is original equipment and has not given me any problem at all in the last twelve years of hard driving over rough ground haying and brushcutting. I have now shreaded FOUR of these rims! The last two rims lasted less than four hours each. I dont even have a front end loader on this machine. The wheel turn stops are not broken off and I have been careful to keep the wheel bolts tight. The rims are breaking in a circular crack out around where the hub ends (it only starts tearing out at the wheel bolt holes after the circular crack has formed and the rim has already lost its structural integrity. So far the only solution I have come up with is to try and find some OE rim but my local junkyard has not been able to locate one. Is there something I am doing wrong? Are there other pieces of equipment that use this rim? Has anyone else had similar problems with these replacement rims? This tractor cant wait too long to get rolling again but I dont feel like joining the "wheel rim of the month club" and I dont want to support those manufacturers of these seemingly crappy parts.

Several questions come to mind what happened to the original rim? Have you compared the replacement to the original for the smallest of details? Those bumps and dimples on the hub part of the wheel are there for a reason. I think it is possible for a wheel to be put on inside out in some spplications. Is it just the one hub or have you tried putting a replacement on the other hub?Just because the hole pattern fits does not always mean the wheel is compatible with that hub. The fact you are having this problem could mean a problem with the matching of wheel to the hub. I suspect that the wheels are just a tad bit smaller than the diameter of the hub (perhaps heavy rust build up on hub) which would not allow the replacement to fit on the rim as it should.

Sounds like you are getting replacement rims that are thinner than original. Easiest place to check thickness are the four places where the steel is bent and welded to the rim. wdtom talks about car wheels found in junk yards- on my first D17 I replaced the AC rims with some wider ones from a yard- I think they were 7:50 or 8:25 x 14/15 that came from a Buick in the 50s, early 60s. I wanted fatter tires for floatation, and they stood up fine.

My brother has car wheels on his WC. Probably the same bolt pattern. They came on the tractor and hi still is using them. Some measuring and a trip to the junkyard may get you some different rims that fit. Watch the offset too, and wide rims will probably not fit.

The wheels are not fitting the hub right and are not drawing down flat to the hub.
