I have a D-17 diesel and one of the sleeves are not above the block like the other five. I have it tore down and would like to raise that sleeve about .003-.004. Does anyone know where I can get a shim to put under that sleeve to get it matched up to the others. I think it got messed up when I had the block welded and the machinist got that one cut to low. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

You can buy .001 and .002 shim stock in sheets that you can cut them from. I buy it(shim stock) by the roll from .001 to .010 and keep it in stock in my mold shop, but Production Tool ( the supplier I use) sells it by the sheet as well.

Dick, what are those shims usually made out of? I would guess brass or copper for a good seal???

You can purchase them in eather brass or steel. I would get brass for under the sleeve. We use steel under and betweem mold inserts that are dry. We use brass where the shim might be in contact with water. Placing a shim under the sleeve only helps the seal between the top of the sleeve and the head. Under the sleeve flange is not a sealing area just on top. The fiber head gasket seales around the outer edge of the sleeve flange and the steel ring seales the firing chamber.
