Manifold gaskets

I"m a novice, refurbishing a WC. The new gasket set for the gasoline manifold came in metal enclosures. Do these serve a purpose? If so, what is it and how are they installed? Any help would be appreciated.

I always rub High Temp Silicone sealer into the gaskets, then they stick to the metal caps, and to the manifold, making it easy to keep it all together while installing the manifold.. I feel it helps keep the asbestos gaskets from blowing out, too..

The metal "gasket ring" cups over the intake/exhaust manifold with the black fiber material going against the manifold and the metal backing of the "gasket ring" goes against the head. Be sure the head has been taken to a machine shop you trust so they can surface the head and the manifold ports, of the head, to a flat surface. Also take in the manifold you are using so they can surface that also. This keep the 2 surfaces flat and true. It makes for a better seal for the head/block and head/manifold surfaces and less chance for a problem. Good luck

They go on the manifold against the block, then the gasket, then the manifold. They help the manifold and cylinder head deal with the temp changes they go through and keep sealing
