had the same problem with one I bought, it turned out to be a 49 WD, that had a WD-45 engine in it. there is a visual differance in the engines. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, The WD-45 had a cover bolted to the side of the block above the oil pan rail on the left side as you were sitting on the tractor.

Bolt-on cover was on right side of engine behind mag/distributor on WD engines but not WD-45 engines.

Left and right are based when sitting on the tractor seat.

This is an excerpt from the "serial number" portion of this site.

1953 146607
1954 160386
1955 190993
1956 217992
1957 230295
The Serial Number is located on top of left differential brake housing.

This gives the staring serial number for each year. It says the number is on the left brake housing. Every WD or WD-45 that I've seen has one there. If the tractor has been painted a lot, the numbers might be hard to read.

The number that I'm going by is on the left side under the seat at about 11 o'clock by the bolted on plate. I'm thinking mine might be a 55. Not sure. But was told it was a 57 wd45.

Having problem identifying year of manufacture. Looked under carb intake, it says "45 53502". I know its a WD45 but can"t find year. Any suggestions?

Look at the rear vertical surface of the differential at the LH brake area. Look for a smooth area between the brake spring hole and the brake adjusting bolt/locknut. The serial number is stamped here and will be prefixed by WD regardless whether it is a WD or WD-45. Look for the engine serial number on the side of the block near the carburetor intake. A WD engine will be prefixed with WD and A WD-45 engine will be prefixed with 45.
