6 Volt Alternator

I visited a friend Sunday night who had just purchased an Allis C with a belly mower. It had a 6 volt battery and an alternator. He started the tractor for me and the amp gauge worked just like you'd expect a good system to function. Initially it charged 30 amps. Then as it ran, the current came down. I'd never seen or heard of anyone having a 6 volt alternator. Is there someplace that sells these?

I"ve built several, using regulators that I bought from a local rebuild shop. The 6-volt internal regulator for a Delco 10SI cost me anywhere from $14 to $25, depending on the mood of the guy behind the counter. Or go to this link and buy whatever kit you need, they have them for 6 volt positive and negative ground alternators.

I have seen 6 volt alts on some websites. I was looking for 1 wire 12 volt. I have not yet seen one work, but I am sure that the work better than the original generator.

Go to google and search 6 volt alternators that should bring up a few hits.

I did as you suggested and found a bunch of stuff. I'm seeing it now but the advantage is not obvious. The six volt alternator are special (not like 12 volt ones) and must be purchased new. Costs range from $100 to $200. The one for $100 puts out about the same current as a generator.

Thanks,

There's NO NEED to buy new, if you need a negative ground 6 Volt alternator. Simply get a good working salvage 10 SI Delco for as little as $10.00, and pop in a 6 Volt regulator.

It is possible to have a POSITIVE GROUND 6 Volt alternator, too, but this requires the rectifier, regulator, and diode trio to be changed to units designed for 6 Volt positive round use.

Even though the ultimate output current of the 6v alternator is probably near the output current of a genny.. I'm betting that the alternator will do it at a much lower rpm.. making it way more efficient. For example.. at 500 rpm or so, the 12v alternator on my 2N charges pretty much at max.. whatever the battery needs.. reving the engine does not change the charge rate. On the other hand, on my cub with a 12v genny, after you start.. there is not much more than 'ignition' charge.. like 4-5 amps at idle.. run the rpms up to mid.. and you get 8 amps.. up to high idle, and you get 12.. etc..

All in all.. I like a genny better... less to go wrong.. more bullet proff and more fault tolerant.

I can make a genny work without a vr or a cutout relay if I have to, using a couple pieces of wire.. switch or a power resistor.. heck.. in an emergency.. a paperclip will work. Can't do that with an alternator with a blown VR or diode trio / rectifier pack from hooking it up backwards..
