I have recently overhauled my wd,new piston, sleeves, ground the crank, new bearings on rods and mains. The only thing I didnt replace were the cam bearings. When it runs it runs great but I can only get the oil preasure up to the N on Normal. It is only pumping a little bit up to the lifters. The lifters dont clatter or sound dry. Do I need to prime my pump or does any one Know where i can buy a new pump. I am running 30 wt oil. I would like to see more pressure.Maybe I should get a new gauge. Help???

Sorry to say this , first thing never overhaul an AC engine with out putting new cam brgs in. you will have low oil presure. the next thing is you need to use a fram c159 oil filter. you can get the filter at most farm & home stores.

I don't have much exp with AC.. but I do have exp with many other makes. in general.. cam is a big oil pressure loss. Be glad you have replacable parts.. in ford N series engines. the cam runs bare in the block!.. nothing to replace.

If you have some oil pumping. the pump is primed.

Now.. if your pump is worn, or if there is an oil pressure refief set low or stuck open.. yuo can loose a few pounds there.

If it were me.. I'd replace the gauge. Iv seen upwards of 4 psi difference on vintage gauges to new gauges, on an otherwise 'good / functioning' gauge. In some cases.. 4 psi may be the difference of overhauling it now or waiting a few years.

Next.. I would perhaps try a 40w oil if i were in a warm environment. if you ar ein a cold area.. that's not a good option. next would be to do the cam and oil pump repair.. if the oil pump is easier to get to.. I'd try that first.. with the knowledge that I may have to go back in later to correct the cam issues.

That's general info.. but it has served my well on my small 'fleet' of tractors.

Tom,
The oil goes to the cam bushings first so if they were not replaced..... ..welllll that just may be the problem. If you want good oil pressure, always replace the cam bushings first.

Hi Tom,

I don't know for sure if the WD has the same bypass type of oiling system as the B and C do but it may. If so, the newer design oil filters marketed by NAPA and manufactured by WIX could be the cause of lower-than-normal pressure. It an easy thing to check first before you dig deeper. See here for background information.

Rod, thanks for the great info concerning the new filters. But can you suggest what filter should I buy?

Tom, Just a thought what oil filter do you have on it? If it is a NAPA or Wix (same thing) it can give low oil pressure.

In my IT manual you can adj. oil preasure by adding or removing washers from the pressure valve located below the oil filter on the engin block.
