I just found out tonight that the AC-B my wife inhereted may have been tried to be run off a 12v battery with the original 6v electrical system on it. It has not been run in a few years due to the fact that it would not start easily and never held a charge, and then wouldn't even start on compression. I was looking at parts to start repairing it and said about switching it over to 12v and she said that is what battery is on it now, but I know that the components are still from a 6v system. Would this have damaged anything on it, and if so what parts so I know what to replace before giving myself a headache.

Excellent advice from our colleagues as usual. I only add that if turns out to have a magneto, stay with it! That baby has an impulse coupler on it that will retard and intensify the spark for starting. There is no need to turn it over fast if everything else is set up right. I don't know about the Bs but WDs are fussy about spark plugs. Seem to like Autolites better than Champions.

the original B was a magnito ignition, not a distributor and coil. look at the cap the plug wires come out of. if there is a center 5th wire from the coil, then you have a distributo. if the cap only has 4 wire then it is the original magnito. magnito ignitions do not need a battery, they are self sparking. the battery is to crank the starter only. you need a generator to keep the battery charged, but not to start and run the motor.---- if you have a distributor/ coil ignition, then you need a battery to give the coil the spark. if you have a 6 volt coil it could be burnt, or the point could be burnt using them on a 12 volt system. what do you have????? ??/

Steve has nailed it. If you have a magneto (4 plug wires and no coil), nothing is affected. If you have a coil, the points and condensor are probably shot and the coil might be weak.

You may need a new coil but as far as the rest if it still has a 6 volt genny it would have thought that the battery was over charged and shouldn't have hurt that part of the system
