Hello, I posted a couple of days ago about how much to offer for the 1938 B. I got it for $200. I had forgotten that he and his father had retired from the highway department and he also still farms. This tractor was a highway department vehicle sold for surplus and that is why it has that great big Quincy air compressor on the back of it. Tractor runs good but the compressor needs rod bearings. I called Quincy and they told me that it is one ancient air compressor and upon further inspection, it looks to me as though the frame for the compressor, which has a Quincy tag, was made to fit that tractor. The one thing they didn't count on was the extreme weight of the compressor so someone had mounted a solid steel weight on the front of the tractor to keep it from up-ending and it has a factory frame weight on the left, front side to offset the weight of the air tank. This tractor was set up to run a jackhammer, which came with it plus 3 bits but we left that in the guy's barn.

I have posted photos in the tractor photo section; please look at them and tell me what you think. I am thinking about cleaning it up, painting it, and taking it to our local Ag Expo and displaying it as an interesting conversion to a farm tractor.

Good morning Mike, and my apologies. I'm the guy that told you not to buy it, so as not to let it get in the way of your friendship with the guy. My apologies, apparently was a mutual agreement. I've been wrong before, and will again.

That sure is an interesting critter. Has a nice tool box, looks like one big chunk of steel under that radiator for counter weight for that compressor. Be careful, those little B's sure are light up front to begin with, and that compressor sure does look heavy. But, it hangs out there so dang far, if get into some hills and she comes up, don't look like she's coming up too far. Get another tank for the other side, use them for pressurized spraying. I didn't look at the photos too close, but that compressor looks to have a radiator, so is self propelled? Or PTO driven? Wonder if a B could power something that big.

Anyway, they run and run and run, so don't let her set. Get her cleaned up and use her, she needs it to survive.

Mark

Hello Mark, you don't have to apologize. I appreciate everybodys opinion. I went over to his place which is way in the middle of nowhere and offered him $300 for it. He refused and said that it is only worth $200 and we settled it like that. Then I found out why he wanted it out of his barn. His family had been in an estate dispute for over 50 years. Last year, the last surviving direct relative passed away so the newer generation decided to settle the entire estate. Everybody was told, before the auction, that if anybody wanted anything to get it. He got a new TO-30 Ferguson which had been locked up in the estate's barn for over 50 years. I looked at this tractor the other day and it is nice. He had to replace the original tires because it had sat so long that they were ruined. He was hoping to create room in his barn to get the Ferguson out of the weather. That is why he wanted to get rid of this Allis Chalmers B and we are the only ones they know who care for old tractors.

By the way, that is not a tool box you were looking at, it is a cast iron frame weight. This old girl really needs it because she is still a little light in the front end. That is a big brass radiator for the compressor and she is powered by the belt pulley with twin v-belts. It has a huge cast iron flywheel. Once that thing gets to turning, she spins real easy.

I would like to thank all who have replied, Mike.

Hey folks, I just came upon an Allis Chalmers B that has sat for a couple of years and won"t start. The owner has a Kubota and doesn't plan to use the A-C. He says it was used by the former owner of the property to plow snow. Originally he planned to sell it for $1200 but doesn't know what he'll ask for it if it won't start. Three and a half questions...Does anyone have a feel for its value? Would it be suitable for general (1-2 acre) vegetable farming? How hard and costly would implements be for one of these?

Any help would be greatly welcome. I'm recieving an entertaining education reading people's posts here. As Roger Welch says in his books- tractor people are a good bunch.

Bob

ifit dont run , $500 is aabout the limit. make sure it truns over andis not stuck. if its stuck, normally $300 or so. $1000 is base line if it runs and has decent tires. $1200 might be alittle high unless it looks nice and tires are above ave. Implements are a littel problem. How to connect? you can drag a disc with a drawbar. if you want a blade or plow it is best to have a 3 point hith. that will cost about $400. if tractor has a hydraulic pump and cylinder mounted already. with the 3 point you can then get implements at Farm STore.

sure looks like a 38. The original B did not have electric start or generator. NOte the front wheel does not have lug bolts like a car, it is a one piece unit that rim and hub are one piece. later units have lug bolts and center hub. Nice little tractor. I agree, leave the compressor on it
