Hello, a good friend of mine has a 1938 Allis Chalmers B that he wants to get me to buy and I don't know what to offer him. It has good rubber, no place for a starter, and a broken high-volume air compressor mounted on it. It hasn't been started in 15 years but has been barn stored for all that time. It is not stuck. The gas tank would have to be flushed out. He is trying to create room in his barn.

I had once owned a 1939 B with a belly motor which was rebuilt and was only able to get $1200 for it locally. I do not want to insult my friend but I don't know what to offer him for this tractor.

I was wondering if any of you folks might have some suggestions on what I should offer.

Thanks again guys!! mike

Don't do it Mike. He's your friend and you want to keep it that way. Probably out of New Mexico, the sheet metal's good, I'm guessing. And you say the engine aint stuck, that's good too. The high volume compressor means nothing really. All and all, is probably a good tractor overall. With no mower, hydraulics, anything else, and on a whole lot of maybes as to what it will or won't do (hand crank too), not more than $500 from me, and probably not quite that either.

But, he's your friend, and you want to keep it that way. Do you want or need it? Drag your feet, and if he tosses a number out that sounds reasonable, tell him ok. If not, drag your feet. Besides, could work the other way - if it aint want you wanted, then takes a lot to fix, you might get mad at him.

Well if hes really a friend he should understand but if hes a fly by night guy he will not. I have lost a number of friends when they needed money and I had it but they never ever payed me back so I guess they weren't really friends.

i agree with old. without a starter drive it has limited sales potential. does it have hydraulics, pump? if it dont start $300 max.
