Grounding the "F" terminal only works for "A" circuit gennies. Grounding the F terminal on a "B" circuit genny won't get you anywhere at all. Also.. 3 brush gennies may not even have an "F" terminal... Good generic advice.. but doesn't apply to " Any genies " as stated. Also.. by grounding the F terminal on an A circuit genny, you are full fielding it.. regulator field controll is effectively bypassed AND maxed.. output on the armature should be max, assuming the genny is polarized and outputting correctly. A circuit gennies can be polarized by shorting armature to battery momentarilly, when not running.. same with the cutout relay / vrwith cutout section.. B circuits can be polarized by jumpering field to battery, momentarilly, when not running. Be certain what type genny/vr you have.. polariging a A circuit genny like a B circuit can burn out a good vr in seconds. If you are in doubt.. assuming the correct vr is installed.. look at the bias resistor on the bottom.. On "A" circuit jobs, the resistor will be between field tab and ground plane.. on B circuit jobs, the bias resistor will be between armature (genny) tab, and field tab. As mentioned.. full fielding an "A" circuit genny is accomplished by grounding the field tab.. full fielding the "B" circuit genny is accomplished by powering the field by jumpering arm to field ( batt to field does the same.. ). 3rd brush jobs are their own cobble... I consider them "B" circuit as the field is powered of the adjustable 3rd brush.. especially since you can remove the brush and convert them to a 2brush genny by using an appropriate voltage "B" circuit regulator to copntroll the field wire that used to attach to the 3rd brush..
