my '47 B has a single hydraulic cylinder used to raise and lower a mower deck. Lately, it wants to work on and off. I noticed it may not work when the tractor is unlevel and leads me to believe the fluid may be low. I can't find anything but general information in my manual and would like to know: where and how to check the fluid, what to use if found low, and does this system share fluid with the final drive in the torque tube? Thanks

You are right in everything. The fuild in the rear axel, transmission is used for the hydraulics. The fill point is by your left heal when sitting on the tractor. Fill until it starts to come out. I use non detergent 30W in mine. Hydraulic fluid is closer to 20W and I believe too light for high pressure gear applications. And gear oil tends to be too heavy for the hydraulic function.

One other thing, the gasket between the tranny and the PTO housing has a gasket that comes up about 3 or 4 inches from the bottom higher than a regular gasket would. This is used only on models with hydraulics and keeps the pump from sucking air when you nose down by keeping oil in the differential.
