Which is compression. Sticky valves from setting and bad rings when last run and no oil to block the blow by.

Dick, you are, of course, absolutely correct. Since it was turning over good, and it had set only a couple of years, and it is an Allis Chalmers, I figured compression was less likely than gas or spark. I missed this one. I had an Oliver engine that was supposedly freshly rebuilt and set on the floor in a garage. When I tried to start it after installing it, it lacked compression. Pulled the manifold and discovered that mice had used the head for their home - it was full of shlled corn and nesting materials. It had set for 20 years but I guess it could happen faster than that. I doubt that rings set up that fast but then I don't know the conditions of storage. Excellent point!
