I have seen that these tractors are less expensive than maroon bellied 7000s. I see they have the wet clutch and the 7040 was avalible with powershift. Also, I see that these tractors have the 426 engine, which is a little bigger than I wanted, I only wanted a 100-110 hp tractor tops, but these are 130-136 hp. My question is are these tractors less expensive because most people want their smaller brothers and ignore these? Don't these tractors use the same parts as the 7080s, therefore being nearly indistructable? Would this tractor bee too big for a 300 acre horse farm where the biggest plow is a 3-16 or 18 (not sure which one). Our biggest tractor is a Ford 7610 which is about 90 and has never been bogged down. Does it hurt these engines to run at about 1/2 speed using the 1000 rpm shaft to get 540 at an economical rating. What is the fuel consumption of these tractors? Is there a way to turn down the pumps even more? I would mainly be using this tractor to batwing with an old 20ft mower, round bale 4x5 ft with an M&W, square baling, manuar spreading in summer and winter (cab would be good), and then plowing with a 3-16/18 and disking with an 10-11ft harrow? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, how much larger in actual size is this tractor compared to a 7000/7010 both height and width. Do they do well on hilly areas (stability)? Is 4900 a good price for one of these two models? Thanks for your help.

If you need to put alot of work in the 7030/7040 stay away from them. Hold out for a 7010/7020, they have the 301 engine (the 7020 is intercooled) and I would go with the powershift, not the power director. They will use between 3 to 4 gals. of fuel/hr compared to the 426 that will use 7 to 8 gals/hr. and the 7010/7020 would only be pulling a gear slower in most cases. I ran a 7045 and 7060 on a 6-18 plow in 5th and 6th, the 7010 and 7020 ran in 4th and 5th and used half the fuel!

hurst- the 7040s and up are basically the same as the 7080 minus engine tweaks like intercooler and injection pump settings to get more hp. 7020 is the same but uses the smaller engine that i believe is the same as the 190. 7000,7010 are different than the rest of the series and are more like 190's with cab and new look, smaller rearends than 7020 and up.

a 7000,7010,7020 would be more effiencient than a 7040 with the 426 turned down. also when you get into the 1000 rpm pto range you have to deal with adapters and reduced engine speed unless your implement has the ability to be changed over for higher pto speed. my father and i had this problem with our 7080 on our round baler. which is why we purchased a 7020. the baler has a gear box that can be flipped to either accomodate 1000 or 540 pto, however with pto adapters and such, slack can cause premature wear on driveshafts and joints. cv joint went out and had to be replaced because of the small amount of slack caused by adapters.

size wise, the only differences are what size tires are used and wheel spacing, which also affect terrain performance.

4900 sounds a bit low to me for a 7040. most of what i have seen in searching for a descent tractor is around the 8000+ range otherwise it has a ton or hours or is beat up

How much difference would there be in efficiency? The 7030 need new seals around the glass, and it is beat up. The 7040 is missing over half of the glass and even more beat up. I have the chance to buy a nice original 7045 for about 8500. The 7045 has the reversable shaft, I was just thinking of lower engine speeds for better economy. What are my chances of finding a smaller 7000 series from a private seller in Ky? thanks for your help.

The biggest probem when running the engine slow to keep the 1000 rpm PTO down to 540 is the noise the implement makes when someone gooses the engine to clear out the carbon or because they don't remember that ruse is being used.

the 7040 is a big tractor for what you want to do. even the 7010-20 are kinda big for chore type tractors.
