Last year I bought tractor C 42635. The boss at the Agco store said 42 means 1942 and 635 is the serial number. The chart at the left of this page seems to indicate it was made in 1947. Which is correct?

Thanks all for the info. This looks like a dedicated bunch and I'll probably be after you with lots of dumb questions about my new toy.

So far as I can figure out, the only tractor company that worked the year into the serial number was Case. And they didn't do this on all tractors that they made. I'm surprised that an AGCO dealer would make this error. Oddly enough, you can get into an argument on this site on serial numbers on ceretain tractors. From my source, your tractor was made in 1947.

tell the AGCO boss he needs to get a job he knows something about. first two digits have nothing to do with the year. serial number list at left is correct.

I was a sophomore in High School in about 1959 when I bought a Model C, serial number 23449. So that dealer would tell me that it was made in 1923? My Dad's WC was 77717-----so was that made in 1877, or 1977? He was a farmer/dealer, and bought it in 1939!

Messed up again- the serial number was 23349. Imagine a senior moment after only these few years.
