I can't get my 6-V AC G started. New battery. Fresh fuel. I'm getting 6 Volts to my distributor, but no spark across the points. What may be the problem?

I have found that points get glazed over, they look good but wont work, and need to be filed or ground lightly to make good contact.

You installed a new battery. These old tractors used positive ground. Make sure the positive terminal of the battery is conneted to the tractor chassic and the negative terminal is connected to the starter. If it's wrong, the coil will have voltage but of the wrong polarity.

The best way to check your ignition is to pull a plug from its socket and use a visegrip to squeeze it against a good ground on the block. Leave the plug wire connected. If the ignition is working properly, you should see a spark across the plug. If it is very weak, you may have a bad coil. Or your connection to the block is inadequate. If it sparks, your problem is no fuel. That is the problem most of the time with my G.

There really shouldn't be any spark visible at the points. Its the job of the condenser to keep down that spark at the points so the points last.

You need a test light. Any 6 volt lamp with some wire leads. You need to check for voltage at the coil primary supply terminal, then for voltage coming and going on the points terminal with the points open (should have voltage) and closed. There aren't many parts. The coil, the points and the condenser in the primary circuit. The condenser can be bad and prevent spark. There can be bare wire grounded. The ignition switch can be failing to supply power to the coil. These are the fundamentals.

When did the spark quit sparking at the points?? I have been checking for spark at the points with a screwdriver since the early 1950"s. The only time I could not see spark at the points was on an engine that would"t run. See spark, you have fuel as well as compression and the engine will run. Assuming it is in time.
