I have a chance to buy a D15 and D17 Diesel. The owner says they are rare. I would like to know an estimate of worth if anyone could help me. The D15 is supposed to be restored and the D17 restored but not painted yet. Thanks for any help.

I think we hit the rare question pretty hard. Neither are rare. I watch EBay very closely. A good percentage of repeat sellers claim all their tractors are rare. In truth, virtually none of them are. Many are very common.

Regarding what will appreciate, I doubt that anyone can help you there. Tractors usually appreciate from improving the mechanical and physical condition. I think this is particularly true for Allis and Oliver and some others. Your chance for appreciation unfortunately lies with John Deere. I've seen John Deere junk bring more money than good running Allis equipment. I can't figure it out. Some guy just spent $700 for a John Deere H with a stuck engine and no tires (tires were there but unuseable). Some have had trouble getting that much for a good running WD. So if it appreciation you want, I think you want the last John Deere 730 made.

I have 40 John Deere's now. I don't know anything about Allis and it sounds like I may not want to. Thanks for the advise.

If the D15 is a utility or industrial because of the shuttle and heavy front end, would it be collectable? I am looking for something that might appreciate over time. Value?

The only Negative of all this D15/D17 Question is the Diesel part. I have owned more than several Allis Tractors but only one two Diesels and one was a WD45,1956 Year and it was the worst Tractor I had. Two Head replacements and a Cracked Block and I had a Gas Engine installed and it worked for many Years after and never again did I complain about it. The other was a 190XT Diesel and it was a Top of the line Tractor in my book. The D Series Diesels probably are good units although I never owned one to Judge them. Don't buy a WD Series Diesel unless you do not intend to use it.

I don't think that the two are rare because they are diesel's. I know of alot of them that are. So
don't pay more for them because they're rare, don't really think they are.

I've seen some pretty nice D-17's bring $5500. D-15's somewhat less. I'm always curious when someone says they have restored a tractor. That means different things to different people. I'd be very skeptical of the claim and want to see receipts and lists of restored items. Usually, restored means to most sellers fixing the things that don't work right and replacing the ones that are worn out. I call that good maintenance. Some guys consider new paint a restoration. That is maintenance as well.

The D15 diesel would be the "rarer" on of the two. What year is the D17, or what is the serial number, as this will show the series. On a D17, the series 4 diesels are worth more than the earlier ones, mainly because of engine improvements and the diesel was fewer in the d17, but it is mostly higher due to the improvements on that engine. For a series 4 d17 diesel restored, you could be looking at about 7K easily on a restored model in my opinion, that is just around KY. Not sure about the D15, but that would be probably around the same is my guess? Good luck with the tractors. If you are just buying a tractor for it's few numbers, you may want to look at something a little farther back and of a different brand, because compared to what a collector would call rare, neither of these tractors would really fit that description, but if you want a work horse, then you have some of the best tractors for that in front of you :).

I recall him saying that the D15 had a heavy wide front end and loader with a reverser also. Would it be an industrial?

The D15 sounds like it would be an industrial, alright. Is it painted yellow ?
They were good tractors for feedlot use.
Make sure the shuttle clutch is working OK.
Allis modified the gear train inside the torque tube to get the shuttle feature.
It uses the same PD clutch components as a standard D15.
