Here is what I have done ( apparently incorrectly)
-Sandy Lake just rebuilt my Mag ( 38 unstyled WC )
-I removed the #1 spark plug and rotated the engine until I felt compression discharge. -I removed the 6 bolt plate under the tractor and turned the engine until the "F" mark was in line with the middle bolt hole.
-I then turned the coupler on the Mag until the rotor was at the #1 terminal on the Mag -Next I installed the Mag

When I crank the engine nothing happens for a revolution or so and then I get a loud bang ( like a backfire )

Help

If you did it mostly according to the book you shouldn't be 180 degrees off. You should have kept turning the crank until the air almost quit blowing out of no1 hole.

If my memory is correct you are suppose to turn the mag backwards until the rotor lines up with the bump which will line it up with no1. Turning the mag backwards takes the impulse and it's lag out of the picture and allows you to get the timing close enough to get the engine running.

The fact that I had to turn it so far to line up the "F" after the compression stroke was complete is what made me realize that the flywheel was installed 180 degrees from the factory setting.

Problem Solved-Get This in reply to Bud W, 05-06-2005 17:25:04
My whole problem was that the flywheel was installed 180 degrees off. Apparently the last time my Great Uncle ( he bought it new in 38 )had the engine apart he chose to install the flywheel so you set the timing looking through the hole ( small plate with two thumb screws )on "top" of the clutch housing instead of laying on your back under the tractor. These old farmer/mechanics were pretty smart-the factory could have learned something here.
Thanks for the input

Bud, Check out my web site for pictures and procedures.
WC not listed but should be the same as a WD for timing the mag.

for hand cranking with a mag, you normally set at TDC, not fire.--- next the mag has an impulse, it builds up as you crank, then jumps and fires. when you turned the mag to #1 i dont know if it is "before" or "after" it jumped. what you need to do is pull the #1 plug out and roll slowly untill the "fire" is in the hole on the compressions stroke. then turn very slowly with somewone looking for the TDC, and listeneing for the mag to "snap" --- you should hear the snap about TDC. loosen the mag and rotate so you hear the snap at that point and it will start by cranking.
