Model C Hot Battery Cable

I've got an Allis Model C that's been in my barn for years. I got a new 6v battery, new battery cables and hooked it up, using the positive for a ground. When I try to start it, the ground cable gets real hot where it is grounded to the frame. Do I have a short somewhere in my system? Bad starter? Any ideas as to where to look?

One way to test what the other fellows said, which likely is the problem, is to take a heavy jumper cable and hook it from the ground (positive) on the battery to a known very good ground on the tractor, like a clean engine bolt. If it starts easy with no problems then your ground cable is somehow the problem, either too small or bad connection. The lightweight jumpers sometimes sold for emergencies to keep in your car trunk might not be heavy enough. Use a good heavy one. Six volt systems have twice the amps (current) of twelve volt systems.

old hit the nail on the head. You will get a hot spot there when you connection is poor. Clean everything down to bare shiny metal. You don't want to see a speck of rust anywhere. Remember that you are trying to pass several 100 amps through this connection.

And yes, unless you specify heavy-duty 6 volt cables, the odds are that you have something lighter. 12 volt automotive cables just will not work on a 6 volt system. You may need to have the cables custom-made. I believe Steve at B&B also sells them.

Well if you used auto type battery cables thats your problem, they aren't big enough. You need 0 or 00 cables on 6 volt. If you used the right cables then its a bad ground, I.E. not clean enough metal, or a bad starter. But I'd bet on the cables be auto type, which are # 4 wich is way to small
