Last week I posted a message explaining that, after a total rebuild (not cheap), that the engine runs fine on the first three cylinders and the fourth fires once maybe every ten seconds. This engine ran fine before it threw a rod. As I mentioned before swaping plugs and wires has no effect and it has around 100 psi for compression in all four cyl. The light from a timing light has the same intenstiy on all four. Could the timing be off by one tooth?

Timing would not effect just one cylinder. You may have a problem with the valves/cam. How new is the dist/mag cap?? If either is old you may have a problem there. Some times old caps do funny things and you will pull your hair out trying to figure things out when its just a simple bad cap and or rotor

i agree with Old on the cap but also spray some carb cleaner around intake manifold gasket while tractor is running...u mite have an intake leak...if it hits on offending cylinder ya found yer prob.

Gatz suggested, and now you (chuck), that it was a leeky gasket. All it needed was tightening of the manifold and it purrs like a kitten. Thanks to all who offered help. Now for the next question: Is there some adjustment to the govener to prevent it from reving the engine rather than a smooth acceleration?
