D17 Series 1 Pitman Arm loose...

does anybody know how the pitman arm [part between inner tie rod ends and steering output shaft] is attached...i'm hoping theres a nut that came loose but i cant see anything other than alot of up and down play...'59 diesel with power steering.

its gotta go on back burner till i find enuff cribbing to pile under frame...manual came in today...AC calls it a center link...i got a feeling mines wallered out...picture shows pin going thru the side and up/down movement is rocking on it if pic is right

Chuck,

I just pulled the front on my Series II D-17 to replace the steering shaft seal. It was not a bad job at all. The hardest part of the whole job was moving the axle out from under the tractor. It's heavy and awkward. You will need to remove the front support as well. I don't think you can get that pin out unless you do but it sounds like the pin has worn completely out or is gone. The support has four bolts through the bottom and will slide out the front. It's about fifty pounds so get a friend to help. No need to remove any sheet metal.

On a WFE, there's a 3/8 Roll Pin (or else a 5/16, can't remember what size for sure) That holds the arm onto the splined shaft.
Might have to drop front axle out to get at it.
IT's AC-201 manual shows a picture.

Chuck, I spent about a half hour going through my D-17 Parts Catalog. This is an (8 1/2 x 11) 363 page catalog. Oddly enough, I couldn't find that "pitman arm" or the shaft that comes out of the steering box. As best as I can tell, there should be a splined shaft coming out of the box. A spline shaft is used for the narrow front (two wheel). The single wheel has a splined shaft that goes up into the box. I expect that the arm has an internal spline that mates with the splined shaft. I also expect that the shaft is drilled and tapped and the arm is held on by a machine screw. When the screw comes out (or breaks off), nothing happens until the spline finally loosens. The hole for the screw may be obscured by grease and dirt.

I've got a 1960 Series II diesel which should have the same front end. The D-17 is at my place 70 miles away. I'm not planning on going up there till Thurs or Fri so I can't check mine before that.

Denny...i appreciate ya looking...i'm sure its splined also...cant see up in there even after pressure washing all that buildup off...i dont wanna take the whole front end off...but looks like i got no choice.

this is a wide front BTW...forgot to mention that.

Chuck, I was going to guess that. If the arm is loose, it muct be held onto the spline by interference by the front end somehow. This means dis-assembly. Let me know how it comes out.
