howdy yall...i got my first AC yesterday...a '59 D17 Series 1 i believe...anyhow i havent gotten a manual yet but the steering is so loose i need to do something NOW so i can use it...is there an adjustment on the box or do i need to rebuild it? the power steering is driven off the back of the generator which brings me to question 2...WTF were they thinking when they designed that and is there an option to relocate pump? i'm not worried about 100 point restoration stuff...i bought this tractor to farm with and i usually put ac alternators on my equiptment for reliability...also what models interchange as far as steering boxes if i wind up needing a new box?
thanx

ps: its got the 262 straight six diesel if that makes a difference

Congrat's on your purchase. Nice Tractors. I live in a community of 12000 + people and our public library carries manuals for a lot of tractors and if they don't have the one I need on hand they can call another library and order it in for me. Give them a call. It's your tax dollars at work. It can get you going until you buy one.

If it is set up like my d14, the only adjustments for the steering is in the box itself. there are shims where the steering valve/worm fits, and shims on the bottom side of the box that set the preload for the sector shaft. you need to take the box off and add/remove shims to set the proper preload. the manual should tell you what the specs are

after checking further the box seems fine...i've got alot of up and down play on the pitman arm [part between inner tie rod ends and steering shaft] do you know how the arm is attached to the shaft? i cant see a nut or pin...was kind of hoping i could just tighten it up.
thanx

Not sure about your steering problem (being loose), but we had a d17 series 4 diesel (66or67 model) and those later d17s had a steering pump that mounted seperate from the generator on its own pully. I don't know why you would change it to an alternator when the genorator is working just fine, and plus, the cost of a rebuid on the generator will probably be equal to a new alternator, but the steering pump won't mount, which you have already figured out. My advise would be to keep the generator, too much trouble to replace it, esp if it is working. About the loose steering, I would check all the U joints on the steering shaft, as one of those could be out and also check the steering wheel to make sure its not spinning around the shaft a little from being wobbled out (forget if it is splined or keyed shaft). To check the steering wheel, just watch the shaft that runs down the left of the tractor when facing the same direction as the tractor, turn the wheel and make sure this shaft is moving exactly how the wheel is. If this isn't your problem, watch the shaft at the steering box at the front of the tractor under the radiator and look for the same thing as above. If that doesn't solve your problem, then it sounds like either the tie rods are loose, or the ball couplings or the steering box needs some work. In case you haven't heard this yet, those early diesels had a water pump mounted to the head, and were prone to cracking/warping if they were not warmed up properly or cooled down after any use that warmed the engine up. Be aware of this, as the head is about 1000 dollars, so take care of it, and let it warm up and cool down before and after use. Good luck, and have fun with your AC.

update... in reply to Hurst, 04-28-2005 10:35:03
i just got thru pressure washing about 46 years worth of cr*p off the tractor and other than a couple worn tie rod ends i see the pitman arm [for lack of correct part name] is flopping up and down like a beached flounder...i cant see a nut or anything that holds it to the steering sector and from the way it looks i'm gonna have to pull the front axle to get at it...please somebody tell me the magic way ;)

as far as the generator goes...its not charging and the wire harness is about completely shot...its no biggie tho...i park my equiptment close to the shed at nite so keeping battery charged is no prob till i figure something out...main thing is getting that steering tightened up...i drove it about 30 miles yesterday to get it home and it ran like a top...temp gauge never moved and i checked water with a thermometer and it was about 130*...not bad for a ride on a hot south Tejas day :)
thanx

I think from what I have heard is you have to take the cowling, grill, and radiator out in order to get to the steering box. I would put a thermostat in that motor, that thing needs to be running at about 180 degrees to run properly (the diesel won't burn all the way if the engine doesn't have a warm enough temperature). I would bet that it is the tierods and u joints on the steering that are not working since you said they move around a lot when you steer (at least that is what I got out of the message). Good luck, maybe someone else can step in and tell you a better way about the steering box.
